Malta Travel Guide: Musicals becoming ever more popular in Malta

Musicals are becoming ever more popular in Malta. Among the many musicals which are held each year, two of them distinctly stand out since they are held regularly throughout the year.

“Strait Street - Shady Lane of Valletta” is a musical that tells the story, of what was for many long years, Malta’s own infamous red light district and the glittering Mecca of adult entertainment. This very narrow pathway in the heart of Valletta was, at the time of the Knights, the prime choice for settling quarrels at the point of sword and dagger, while taverns and girls of easy virtue soon followed.

Meet your friend Joe, an entrepreneur of pleasure and entertainment and his all-singing and dancing cast, who will be taking you on an imaginative, musical tour through the centuries to unravel the dark secrets of this shady pathway of lust and desire.

Make the acquaintance of great artists, prostitutes, pimps, aspiring entertainers, sailors and soldiers of many nations. Witness a promiscuous 18th Century carnival, the antics of British servicemen, the tragic and heroic days of World War II and the rowdy invasion of the boys of the American Sixth Fleet in the mid-70‘s.

A non-stop celebration of great music with some 31 original numbers, ranging from the Baroque minuet to a sensual tango, from melodic ballads to cool blues, from raunchy vaudeville to rock n’ roll... and much more!

A complimentary platter with wine is also served during the show.

The show is held every Tuesday at 7.30pm at the Arena Theatre, Montekristo Estates, Hal Farrug, which is also home to the renowned musical show about the Great Siege, “Knights Spectacular 1565”.

The Knights of Malta are possibly the island’s most famous ever inhabitants. Steeped in tradition and history, their rule over the country was as eventful as it was dramatic.

And it is exactly that sort of combination that makes the Knights Spectacular show one of the things you simply have to see while in Malta.

This two-hour musical epic centres on the events of the Great Seige in 1565, when an Ottoman armada of 40,000 men was defeated by the sheer determination and resolve of Malta’s vastly outnumbered knights.

Featuring a cast of 50 performers, eight impeccably-trained horses, spectacular costumes and an original musical score – the show includes everything from live battles to dance routines to a thrilling love story.

Housed in a purposely-built arena on the Montekristo Estates, the Knights Spectacular show has been watched by thousands of foreign and local patrons over the past couple of years and has now cemented its place as one of the island’s must-see attractions.
